Efficient lighting is one of the key ways businesses and consumers can conserve energy and save on their utility bills. While LED light bulbs are more energy-efficient than the incandescent bulbs of the past, they are still expensive and the process to mine rare-earth elements needed to make them is harmful to the environment. Two UW engineering students recently formed a company to make the vital part of LED light bulbs in a more efficient and environmentally-friendly way. At the same time, Seattle City Light has made lighting a central component of their energy conservation investments. Seattle City Light offers rebates to customers for light bulbs and other products, as well as offering expertise to businesses on lighting and other projects.
