Ancient Roman Slavery and American Slavery

From the colonial period through the nineteenth century, ancient Rome often served as a touchstone for slaveholders in the United States–the slaveholding “civilization” that they aspired to emulate. But how did ancient Romans themselves conceive and institutionalize slavery? And how did their understandings of freedom hinge on the deveolpment of a slave system?
