Infections in Spine Surgery

November 9, 2013

One of the most feared and persistent complications in any intervention is infection either locally at the site of a procedure or systemically, throughout the body of a patient. Dr. Richard Goss provides a historical review of infection prevention measures and addresses advanced infection control measures in a modern hospital such as Harborview Medical Center. Drs Michael Lee and Carlo Bellabarba provide background information on infections in spine surgery and their surgical reconstruction needs while Dr. Pottinger from the Division of Infectious Diseases of the UW Department of Internal Medicine provides valuable background information on antibiotic management and general antimicrobial care strategies.
